The Coming King

It’s easy, as Christmas approaches, to focus so completely on the moment of Jesus’ birth that we forget about how much was spoken of Jesus long before the events of Christmas day. Mary wasn’t chosen at random, the timing of his birth wasn’t by chance. Throughout the Old Testament, there are over 300 times where scholars believe the authors were speaking of Jesus. These prophetic moments speak to everything from Jesus’ birth, his lineage, his ministry, his death, his resurrection, and his role in the end times.

The words spoken of Jesus in the Old Testament are more than random fun facts. They are key in knowing that Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah. They were given to the people of Israel both as a promise that God had a plan for redemption of his people and so that they would know the true Messiah when he arrived. And they continue in these two purposes today.

The season of Advent is all about waiting and preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ and so it is a great time to look back on the prophesies spoken specifically about his birth. In this year’s Advent series, we are going to be doing just that. We will look at one of the key prophesies about the birth of the promised Messiah and then take a look at the Scripture which tells us how Jesus was the fulfillment of that prophecy.
